Writing for Wellbeing

It’s now proven that writing expressively about our lives and feelings can lead to a profound improvement in health. Building upon the ground-breaking research of Dr. James Pennebaker and the work of John F. Evans, this short correspondence course will explore guided writing experiences including expressive, transactional, and poetic writing. Participants do not need to have any proficiency with or affinity for writing to benefit, just an enthusiasm to explore their own voice, and express themselves on the page. For further information about some of the types of writing we’ll cover, see Categories of beneficial writing, as defined by John F. Evans. Work through writing tasks at your own pace in this tailored 1-1 course. Tasks will be delivered to your inbox weekly by email, and you are welcome to email finished work to the tutor for discussion.Commitment needed per week: 2 hours

Wuthering Heights set in Benidorm?*

There’s no doubt that the Yorkshire Moors were a forceful character in their own right, as Heathcliff and Cathy played out their doomed love affair under the gloomy eye of the crags and drizzle. Emily Bronte’s classic novel provides just one example of how location can massively enrich and influence a piece of writing.

Try your hand at writing inspired by a specific location. I will lead you through some guided exercises in order to soak up the most from your surroundings.

This workshop encourages participants to think about spaces creatively; participants will gain a better understanding of the specifics of space, and learn transferable skills that they can apply to any space for inspiration.

*Heathcliff throwing himself into a swimming pool in protest at Cathy’s flirtation with a bronzed Spanish barman might not have been so moving.
